Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the Deep Ellum district near Downtown Dallas. There is a large amount of street art in the area, this one is in an alleyway between Main and Commerce streets. There are garage doors at either end of the covered alley, but they are never closed

Time

This was taken in late afternoon.

Lighting

The alley this was painted in is covered (I believe it was a garage at one point), so the lighting is a bit subdued.

Equipment

This shot was taken hand-held with a Canon 70D and Tamron 16-300mm lens. No tripod or flash was used

Inspiration

I had been wanting to shoot the street art in the area, and finally got a chance. There are a lot of interesting things going on in Deep Ellum!

Editing

This is an HDR composite of 3 different exposures, other than that I only enhanced colors and lighting a bit in LightRoom

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 70D with a Tamron 16/300mm mounted for a 'ready for anything' setup. If I'm going for something specific I'll also carry a 5D Mk III and whatever lens fits what I want to achieve. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't get to plan a lot of shots beforehand. However I've found the lenses that spend the most time on the 5D are various primes or Wide-Angle zooms. On the 70D I like the Tamron's range as it allows you to capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the open

Feedback

There wasn't a lot of setup involved in this shot, so about the only advice I'd have is get out and see what's around your own town! I know a lot of people that have never really explored the areas in which they live...
