Location
This little gem of a shot was taken one beautifully bright day in April 2017. This taken on the virtually deserted Sugar Beach, Maui.Sugar beach is located on the North end of Kihei Maui, west side beaches. Maui just one of the Hawaiian Islands has opportunity in abundance for the landscape, seascape & nature photographers. This photo here is a composite of two shots, one on Sugar Beach and the other, the turtle (Honu) was taken at the beach side in front of the Zen Mission Paia, MauiTime
This shot was taken in the later part of the afternoon, a time and place where I frequently took walks and the camera in hand. No tripod needed and when at one end of the beach I turned around and gazed down the beach. Looking up towards Haleakala that was visible with only some clouds hanging low on the mountain side was a perfect backdrop for this shot. When it is clear and bright like this day, the colors sparkle and the view breathtaking!Lighting
This of course was all natural light and like I have mentioned in the afternoon this day. On thing about the sun on Maui, it is bright most fo the time. Although pretty spectacular to see, not so much to shoot for this photographer, it is a challenge not to have the rest of the shot blown out by the bright natural light. If you are here on Maui or any other island, like the Big Island where there is an active volcano, VOG or volcanic fog clouds the shot and will produce a pink tint to the other gorgeous sunset that essentially can ruin a great shot and is not visible in the camera at the time when taking a shot.Equipment
This shot I believe was taken with the Canon Rebel5t I have, handheld and no flash or tripod, monopod needed.Inspiration
Maui has so many gorgeous landscape, adorned with Tropical plantation, sunny sandy beaches of different colors, from summer sun to the tropical rainforest graced with waterfalls on the east side. Sugar Beach has no surfers here, too much reef and just not the right conditions on this one beach. As you can see it is not that populated and the beach is quite long, around 1.5 mile stretch, with the soft sand below you feet, the sun sets here at the low point on the West Maui Mountains. Sailboats do frequent the waters here not viewed in this shot. The view alone is all the inspiration I need.Editing
Just a simple use of Topaz Plug in tools, the adjust tool, not too dramatic and putting 2 images together in Corel. I use Photoshop, Lightroom and Corel with Topaz plug in tools. In my camera bag
I currently have upgraded form the Canon Rebel5t, and use as the primary camera a Sony A7RII with 18-200mm. I carry a tripod,Monopod with me at all times. In the bag is my Rebel5t as a back up, assorted filters, flashes, lots of batteries and cards. Remote.Car charger for batteries. I also have a journal to keep notes so if I need or want to write something down at the time, like time of day, location, anything unusual for that shot or location. I carry an ipad as wellFeedback
As we all know being in the right place at the right time always produces a great shot, as long as the camera is in hand and ready. Fortunately here the scene on Sugar Beach stays about the same with weather changes time to time but makes for more opportunities to take good natural shotsAs mentioned above about the VOG, it pays to check weather, surf reports, sunset and sunrise times here, help to prepare for the shots you are wanting. As my mentor always has told me, look at the subject, the foreground and background, compose the picture before you click. Clean the lens optics first! Most of all be creative!!
