That's a wave, but it's even a better capture!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the cliffs of Maui's famous surf spot JAWS, Peahi, Hawaii. I am fortunate enough to live here and can walk to this spot. This was at high swell season which is in the winter with waves this year 40-60+ feet high. Kai Lenny , a local pro surfer is on his board here and the Drone belongs to Randy Braun. Not every winter produces these kinds of swells so it is lucky for me that I was there.

Time

This is a stunning image taken approximately at 11 am that day. This image is not edited and this is what I love about taking photos here on Maui, she has natural beauty just as she is.

Lighting

The lighting is 100 % natural. There was no need to enhance it whatsoever. A perfect day in the water, a perfect weather day produced a really gorgeous photo

Equipment

Canon Rebel T5 Zoom lens 75-300mm, handheld, no flash

Inspiration

I live just several miles away from JAWS and when the swells are good, all the locals know it, so we are all down there catching that perfect wave, whether it be on the surf board, with a drone, in the water or spread all over the cliff side and in boats shooting it

Editing

I did not need to do post processing, what you see is what I got.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS Rebel T5 and EF 18-55mm macro lens, EF zoom 75-300mm, Go Pro hero 3.

Feedback

Research surf reports, weather reports and if it says over 25 feet, get there anyway you can and capture this beauty as I was fortunate enough to do so myself.Patience many times wins out. Sometimes I have spent entire days just waiting for the one. I must admit living here on Maui helps but not necessary if you really want to capture photos like this. The large swells always arrive in the winter months between November and January the most often. Always bring extra everything and don't forget the zoom lens! **I would like to add here a thank you to my mentor/ teacher, who inspires me, who pushes me, teaches me, challenges me to do more, to do better and the results are showing in the quality of my photos.Thank you Russell Maddock for being an inspiring teacher!
