Behind The Lens

Location

This beauty that has gained popularity! It was from my "point and shoot" days before I knew anything, This is a 60 ft wave from the infamous JAWS surf break. On the wave is our Maui homegrown big wave and world surf winner Ian Walsh. I beleive this was taken in the 2009 series.

Time

Back then, if you want to see the show, be there at 6 am but will have to wait until about 1pm for the largest swells, lately they are mid morning but here was the afternoon.

Lighting

All natural light but I was sitting under a tree

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon Dx40 and zoom lens, no flash, no tripod

Inspiration

Everything about JAWS inspires any photographers and here especially! This was taken from the cliff over looking the huge swells and before WSL got in there . When surf is up about 200 photographers line the cliff getting those shots not to mention in the boats along side. I wanted to get a view of these waves and I have to walk about 4 miles to get there on foot and will to do that! The sound of the enormous powerful swells were inspiration enough but look at those colors!

Editing

NONE. did not know anything about post processing at the time

In my camera bag

All I had then was my Nikon and a tripod that worked ok.

Feedback

Keep up on surf reports. As this year they put in the news JAWS will have 40 ft waves but was at midnight and by daylight they decreased to 15ft. Know your Area, do research, check weather, times. Be ready to drop everything when that perfect shot comes, timing is everything! I have learned alot more since taking this photo as I always am inspired to keep learning. Look at the angle, composition, what is it you want your viewers to know about the subject? Do you have tripod, optics clean, batteries, card in place? In other words have learned to be in the moment and really think and compose the shot I want. Sometimes I do and sometimes I forget but no matter what I just do it! I always stay open to learn more!
