Thank you so much, JAWS is amazing to capture when conditions are like this, but at any time if waves are 30Ft and over, stunning!

Got to see Jaws in 2018, didn't get the best vantage point. Weather wasn't great and competition got cancelled. The size and sound of these waves is incredible. GREAT SHOT. Creepy face in the foam. :)

I was there to and swell was no good that year, 2009 was the best and 2019 showed nice swells locals are used to in winter JAWS surfing! Thank you!

WSL cbdMD JAWS BIG WAVE SURF CONTEST at Peahi "JAWS" in December 2019.Front row view on the edge of the cliff. I was sitting on a sloped edge underneath the shaded green trees capturing these brave and skilled surfers, men and women alike. 9 hrs, 15 snapped boards and no injuries.Waves of 35-50 ft faces ran all day long!Time
Front row view on the edge of the cliff underneath the shaded trees capturing these brave and skilled surfers, men and women alike. I like others had to get up and hike 1 1/2 miles of dirt road to the cliffs edge at 6 am or earlier to get that perfect spot. 9 hrs, 15 snapped boards and no injuries throughout the event made for an amazing graceful yet jaw dropping show. Waves 35-50 ft faces of jet powered roaring blues that can crush you in a moment if not experienced. They ran all day long!Lighting
Light changed all day long of course, from bright coming from the east gracing those waves just right such as this one to the cloud covered blue skies to overhead bright light to sunshine blazing on the west that most often is the biggest challenge.Equipment
Sony A7RII with Sel 82000 lens all handheld. NO flash required as i have gotten used to the subjects here what needs flash and what will never need flashInspiration
What is not inspiring about JAWS 35-75 ft swells that only come during winter months and not ever year.Surfers and photographers alike anxiously await and anticipate that first winter swell. WSL now puts on the WSL Peahi BIG wave contest for the league and gets to call the fisrt swell of the season. At first a bit rough co-coorodinating the needs of surfers and locals, photographers alike whom are accustomed to walking down to the cliff's edge without permission concern that someone will take ownership of thier precious land and natural events. Maui hold ownership of these swells. This year no different but WSL has worked with respect and diligence to make the event pleasant for locals and all of you online, to keep the surfers safe and the safety teams even safer. They are redesigning boards and wet suits just for these big wave events. Now local people have granted WSL use of their cliff to televise so all of us can enjoy like we always have to just walk to cliff edge and enjoy the show. I have gotten to know some of these surfers, and they have worked hard for the events. The sounds of these wave rushing the cliffs sounds like jet engines, and the fierceness can be felt everywhere and even 1/2 mile away. For any photographer into the barell with the surfer on the board is ideal but sometimes just the shear awesomeness of mother nature is good enough.Editing
I did enhance slightly the colors and glare so you can see what I was able to see. I use photoshop and Corel most of the time.In my camera bag
I primarily use the Sony A 7RII with a SEL 18-200mm F 3.5-6.3 lens. I also carry a backup , the Canon Rebel 5 but rarely use it anymore. Although the Canon is not my favorite, one never knows when I will need those lenses or the camera. It is always wise to carry MORE. In my backpack extras of everything including car chargers, plenty of batteries and memory cards as I shoot in RAW format.I carry also the tripod and monopod with me and an umbrella, flashlight, and Macro tubes.Always learning and so my equipment grows with it. I don't forget the business cards and ipad. I try to be prepared for any shot that could come along.I added a 90mm f2.8 Macro lens as wellFeedback
I am a landscape photographer primarily so I need Patience and lots of it at times! Take risks, shoot outside your comfort zone and get creative, get low, get high, shoot in the dark, shade and sun, shoot everything and then go with what feels right for YOU.I have learned alot more since taking this photo as I always am inspired to keep learning. Look at the angle, composition, what is it you want your viewers to know about the subject? Do you have tripod, optics clean, batteries, card in place? In other words have learned to be in the moment and really think and compose the shot I want. Sometimes I do and sometimes I forget but no matter what I just do it! I always stay open to learn more! I try to really pay attention to what I love, the creativity and not be a cookie cutter version of someones else ideas, I like to create my own. I think of what is out there typically and some composite I would love to create in software, so keeping this in mind I get shots just for these extra creative moments. Happy shooting!
