Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo of this happy guy at the North Texas Irish Festival on the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas. A lot of local shelters attend and do foster/adoptions of larger breeds there.

Time

This was shot indoors in one of the big exhibit halls, so time of day didn't affect things much! It would have been early afternoon though.

Lighting

I was shooting hand-held using available light, which were big hanging overhead sodium floodlights. I didn't use a flash because I didn't want to be obtrusive or startle anyone.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d Mark III with an 85mm F1.8 prime lens for this shot, hand-held without a flash. I had the aperture set to F2.2 to help reduce shake and narrow the depth of field for the dog's portrait.

Inspiration

Honestly, I had just had a knee replaced and was out to get some exercise - the festival seemed like a great place to get out and walk around!

Editing

I did very little post processing on this shot, mostly just to correct for the hall's lighting.

In my camera bag

These days I'll usually carry a Cannon 70D with a Tamron 16/300mm lens mounted, and a 5D Mark III with a few extra lens that fit what I'll be shooting. I don't like changing lenses out in the open, so I'll try and pick out what I think will work beforehand. Don't forget extra batteries!

Feedback

Local festivals are a great place to do people watching and street photography! I used a fairly open aperture on this shot; I possibly should have closed it down a bit to also get the nose in focus, but with the intense blue eyes the narrower field worked here.
