Behind The Lens

Location
I captured this image in my home town of Sun Valley, Idaho, with it's iconic ski mountain (Baldy) in the background.
Time
I had my eye on this snow cornice for a few weeks, and knew that by shooting it in the morning, the early light would create shadows that would help accentuate the steepness of the terrain and contour of the wind drifts.
Lighting
See previous answer...
Equipment
Canon 5D Mark IV with a 16-35mm f/4L at 24mm, handheld.
Inspiration
I've been on an environmental portrait kick, and hadn't done anything in the winter for a while. When my friend from Argentina, Fede Steindl, came to spend the winter with us, I had a perfect "victim" to head out with and make something creative. The plentiful snowfall that year created a unique snow formation in an area that I hadn't seen it happen before, and the composition "hit" me one day and I knew I had to turn the vision into a reality.
Editing
RAW processed in Lightroom, with additional minor edits in Photoshop. I converted to B&W using NIK's Silver Efex.
In my camera bag
As a Canon shooter, I typically stuff the following into my Peak Design, Lowepro and Tamrac backpacks: 5D MK IV and 5DS bodies, an assortment of lenses (16-35mm f/2.8 L, 16-35 f/2.8 L II, 24-70mm f/2.8 L II, 70-200mm f/2.8mm L II, 85mm f/1.4 L, 35mm f/1.4 L, 200-400mm f/4 w/ 1.4X built-in extender, Sigma 14mm f/1.8 and Zeiss 15mm f/2.8), Manfrotto & Gitzo tripods, Manfrotto ball heads, a variety of filters (ND, Graduated ND, Polarizers), a tele-extender (1.4X), Canon SpeedLights, and PocketWizard remote triggers, and Elinchrom studio lighting.
Feedback
When a creative vision hits you, chase it down! Often, the hardest part is just getting out there and trying. I have never regretting trying to turn a vision into a reality, and have found few things more gratifying than seeing it come to fruition. Happy shooting!
