I had the opportunity to shoot the Figawi for a number of years (I was designer of their program book). I should explain… The Figawi is an annual sailboat race – from Hyannis on Cape Cod out to Nantucket Island approx 30 miles offshore. Actually the event is full Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. The race is Saturday morning and usually lasts a good part of the day. There are several classes of boats based on size. Depending on the wind, sometimes the bigger boats can handle the course in just over two hours. But it could also could take most of the day, especially for the smaller boats…

After the race there is a fun weekend on the island for all participants. With the 200+ participating boats, the crews, race sponsors and administration easily fills up the island’s hotels (and often restaurant space too). So if you want to visit at that time (to watch all the boats come in), I’d advise reserving your hotel or B&B many months ahead...

This shot is one of my favorites. I like shooting directly in to an oncoming boat in full sail. I feel it really shows the power of the wind. It was crystal clear this year (2009), but fog occasionally slows things down. Note the island ferry in the background.
