Spotted this cute little colorful butterfly comfortably sitting with its vibrant fresh wings under the soft sunlight, it was looking so fresh as if she just had a good shampoo bath. I was very close to catch that colorful moment as they hardly know I’m there. I knelt slowly down to make an angle before they’re ready to fly off, but luckily I was able to capture this lovely creature just in time.

Delias eucharis, the common Jezebel, is a medium-sized pierid butterfly found in many areas of South and Southeast Asia, especially in the non-arid regions of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken on a pleasant evening at about 4 p.m. on 18th July 2020

Time

As a wildlife photographer, I often begin the day with a thought where do I begin? and one day it was 4 p.m. in the evening I ventured into the garden near by to my home, with determination to capture butterflies. The weather was right and it was spring season. Spring time is best to access near by gardens, to go out and start shooting.

Lighting

The light was very ambient, exactly how I wanted it to be and adjusted my settings in accordance to the available light. While I was in the garden looking at the pretty butterflies hip hopping from plant to plant my eyes fell on this cute Indian Jezebel Butterfly sitting very firmly and drinking the nectar from the flower. I immediately pulled the camera from my shoulder and and bent down slowly and aimed at it gently angling it against a soft green blurry background and took the shot.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Camera with 55-250mm lens, and not a macro lens since I wanted to shoot the butterfly from a distance as we know that when our shadow falls on the butterfly they presume danger and fly away, in fact a micro lens would do a great and better job but needs a lot of patience to go close to them.

Inspiration

I shot a lot of butterflies previously but what inspired me to take this shot was that the butterfly was showing off its brilliant colors with its wings closed which looked amazing.

Editing

I shot this picture in RAW file just to get the white balance in shape. I did not do any color grading as the butterfly was colorful. I added little bit of luminance to pop up that color on it.

In my camera bag

In my bag I always carry my Canon 5D camera, with my 250mm lens, macro lens, flash light, dust covers, tripod, lens hood, rain cover for the camera and some few memory cards.

Feedback

When shooting butterflies my advice is to be patient sit and observe the butterfly very calmly and when it rests on the flower then take the shot . Patience is very important while shooting, especially butterflies.
