Beautiful image. Curious where you photographed this? You have labeled it as a Monarch. It is definitely a Nymphalid but is not a Monarch.

Location
I was on my way intending to shoot some birds around and decided and entered a park nearby to my home in Hyderabad-India, As I entered the park I was fascinated by the butterflies hopping around from one plant to another and no sooner I changed my mind to capture these butterflies instead of the birds...Time
It was in the evening around 5:00 p.m. and was waiting patiently for one of the butterfly to settle down, and as it rest on one of the plant on a tiny flower I took position and began to focus.Lighting
And yes I was very fortunate with the soft light which was falling from a patch of a huge tree nearby and falling exactly on my subject, And as continued to stay focused there was a slight breeze and an obstacle of other leaves causing distraction in the frame so I moved to my left and knelt down and took another angle and continue to focus patiently and when finally the breeze calmly settled down, then I went ahead took the shot.Equipment
I used a Canon 600D Camera, and Cannon 250mm telephoto Zoom Lens,Inspiration
The beautiful color and the pattern on the wingsEditing
While shooting wildlife photography post processing comes in handy and its advisable to always shoot in RAW, I did post processing to this image and darkened the areas around the butterfly and used the white balance and increased the temperature for the image to look warmer, since the camera settings at times do not match the weather conditions so I took the advantage of processing it a bit, and finally I am happy with the outcome. In my camera bag
I always carry a Canon EF-S 55-250mm telephoto zoom Lens for wildlife photography, 18-55mm to shoot landscape whenever its a beautiful day, A Tripod to avoid handshake which may cause the image to blur especially when using slow shutter speed, and of course water to be cool and composed. : )Feedback
When taking butterfly photos one should always be happy and feel the beauty surrounded with the subject, but when it comes to shooting wildlife photography one must always respect the privacy of the animals. shooting butterfly pictures takes a long time to get good shots, and to get good shots one must have enough patience which is very very important as a photographer.
