The photo of the egret was taken at the Palo Alto Bird Sanctuary located in the wetlands on the west side of San Francisco BayTime
Photo was taken on a bright, sunny day around noon.Lighting
The lighting during the middle of the day can be quite harsh, especially while taking photos of birds. It's important to know your camera so that you can adjust your settings accordingly in order to get the best photo possible.Equipment
At the time this photo was taken I was using a Nikon D7100. Since then, I have upgraded to a D750 full frame.Inspiration
I love bird photography and on this particular day there were quite a few white egrets wading in the shallows looking for small fish and crustaceans. I was able to capture several photos of them taking off or landing.Editing
After adjusting this photo in Lightroom for clarity and exposure I took it into Photoshop where I did some extensive composite work in order to create this digital, many-layered piece.In my camera bag
My current camera of choice is a Nikon D750 full frame DSLR. I usually shoot with my 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens which I find very versatile in most situations, especially when traveling. I also have a macro lens, a Nikkor 24-120mm, and a Nikkor 150-600mm zoom lens. I always have 2 64gb memory cards in my camera and a spare card in my bag along with a spare, fully charged battery and battery charger. In addition, I have a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, remote release, several ND filters, polarizing filters for all lenses, and cleaning supplies.Feedback
The wetlands off San Francisco Bay provide excellent opportunities for photographing a variety of birds, especially in the fall and spring. Egret and blue herons are frequent visitors and can be seen fairly close to shore. Early morning or late afternoon is usually the best time for capturing these birds, as well as other shore birds, because of optimum lighting.
