"Perfect Symmetry" is the term which immediately springs to mind when gazing at the incredible physical structure dragonflies have developed over 325 million years of adaptation and natural selection. They are the most extraordinary animals: strong fliers capable of crossing oceans, voracious and adept predators throughout their lifecycle, and conspicuously iridescent thanks to their structural colouration - not unlike that of a peacock’s feathers. And yet, for all their brilliance and multi-millennial resilience, they are currently threatened worldwide, predominantly through habitat loss. As the human population expands and our cities densify, so we concrete over our wetlands and pave our gardens, trampling on the Earth as though we know better. How out of balance with nature we have become... We could learn a lot from simply admiring the humble dragonfly - its perfectly-balanced poise mirroring the exquisite ecological balance it has maintained for four orders of magnitude of time longer than humans have been around. Should we wish to tip the scales of survival in our favour, we must take the lesson of the dragonfly and realise we are a part of this Earth, not apart from it.
