The first time I saw a Red Disa orchid (Disa uniflora) was during my first hike up the notoriously steep Skeleton Gorge trail on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. I embarked on the hike not realizing it would take me to the top of the mountain. 2 hours later, nearing the top of the gorge, absolutely exhausted, head down, and focused only on putting one foot in front of the other, I looked up briefly, and what I saw took what breath I had left away. Right in front of me, in all its glory, bloomed this very Disa. The power of its magnificence - radiating colour and elegance such as I had never seen - left me stunning and amazed, and I was hooked. Now every year I return up that gorge to find this very flower - drawn by the power of its beauty - and it never fails to take my breath away.
