Location
The original photo of the country street was taken in Michigan on a road that is across from my nieces farm. The moon, sky and bird was added later in photoshop.Time
the country road was shot around 2pm, the moon was shot at night, the sky was shot at night and the bird was shot during the day at the beachLighting
the lighting was harsh during the middle of the summer day in MichiganEquipment
Nikon equipment. Nikon D800 and nikon D7100. the country road was shot with a 15mm Zeiss, the sky was shot on long exposure with a 50mm Zeiss, and the moon was shot with a 600 and a 2xInspiration
I knew when I shot the country road I was going to manipulate the moon in the shot. It's one of those visions you have while looking through the viewfinder. the low angle, lines running out of the lens and down to infinity! It was begging for something at the and of the lines. your eye is drawn right down the center and to the end. I could see the moon rising in my mind at the end of the road.Editing
the final image is all post, first converting them to black & white and working on the tones, the sky is so dark and full of tiny stars i left the tones in the country road very contrasty to work with the sky, the moon was slightly over exposed in the original shot and I dodged many areas to bring it down. The idea was to try and keep all the contrast the same and easily viewable to the eye. I also usually try to keep the key or main light and shadows going the same way on all the images I manipulate. In this one the barn on the right, the shadow and light direction are from above where all the other light directions are from the rightIn my camera bag
I have three different bags depending on the project I am working on. 1 a small bag for 1 body, 2-3 lenses, flash, small tripod, batt, cards 2 mid size bag body, 4-5 lenses, flash, batts, cards, medium tripod 3 large bag and maybe case, 2 bodies, 6-7 lenses, strobes, remotes for strobes, battery for strobes, lg tripod and medium i generally look at what I need to shoot and make up what I think I will need. most of the time i take more than i needFeedback
If your going to create surreal images as in this one. there are three ways to do this. 1- pre-visualize it before you shoot and make a plan of what you intend to shoot and what you intend to do in post 2- images you already have, by thinking of how to manipulate them together to create an interesting surreal final image 3- the third is when you are on a location and you see the image and the final post effect in it. This is how I did the country road above. I personally use number 1 most of the time and go out trying to create something i imagine In all, shoot, shoot, shoot and take notes so you know what you shot and how.
