Location
This photo was taken in my 1st home studio I built in the basement of my old house, it was a small space, and shooting was a bit challenging due to how small the room was. It was a great learning experience though, I have since built a new studio in a larger space.Time
This was taken in the evening as the model traveled to my studio from an adjacent city after she had gotten out of work. After preparing the studio, and applying the 1st coat of paint on the body, we started shooting towards 9pm or so. When working with paints it's tough to know exactly what direction to take the shot as ideas pop up as the shooting begins.Lighting
My goal with this particular photo was to use a single strobe attached to a large soft box. I wanted the lighting to be as diffused as possible as the metallic surface on the skin is quite reflective. I also wanted to be sure that the background was completely obscured. The light is angled down, and was sitting directly to the right of the frame as close as I could get it to the model.Equipment
This was shot with my 1st DSLR camera which was an entry level Canon T5I. No tripod was used as I moved around quite a bit in an attempt to frame the shot while working in a very tight space, this particular photograph here was shot laying on my belly while crawling under a table which was my workstation for my various paints. A single strobe was used attached to a soft box with white fabric wrapped around the soft box frame. I used various water based paints which I applied with a turkey baster on top of the metallic "base" coat.Inspiration
When I first thought of this image, my goal was to create a "living statue". Having lived in Europe for awhile, it is common to see people posing as statues in public squares. The idea spawned from seeing those street artists in the public squares that sit as still as a log and only move slightly to attract attention from the passerby's.Editing
The only post processing was removing paint splatter which was visible on the black backdrop, other then that I lowered the highlights and boosted the shadows. In my camera bag
My most essential piece of equipment is a flashlight, I do a lot of shooting at night, and this little LED flashlight has proved to be worth it's weight in gold! In my bag I usually have 3 flashes, 2 remote triggers, lens cleaning equipment, smoke bombs, allen wrenches, business cards, and batteries... lots of batteries.Feedback
Make sure you use water based paints, research any product you use, the last thing you want to do is cause a skin irritation on the model. Have plenty of towels handy, keep the model warm as paint on the body can get your model uncomfortably cold. Prep your area with plastic, or tarps, as paint will inevitably go all over the place. Make sure you have some sort of eye cleaner, paint in the eyes stings whether its water based or not. Have cleaning supplies available for after the shoot, soap, lufas, shampoo, etc.... Create as you go, have a concept ready, but be prepared to create on the spot, 1 little drop of paint can inspire a whole new idea, collaborate with the model, they often have great input, and you can feed off each others creative energy to make a great photograph.
