Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Singapore, in the December of 2014. I was only there for 4 days.

Time

Unfortunately I can't pull the exact information from EXIF data because I was on my way home to Sri Lanka from the United States. Since I didn't change the time on my camera, it recorded the New York's time zone. If my calculations are correct, this was taken at 11:21 a.m. (16-Dec-2014) which sounds about right because I remember it being close to noon.

Lighting

This was a candid shot. So all the lighting is completely natural. I was waiting to go to the Zoo and I saw this little girl falling asleep. I know it's not the best time of the day to take pictures but I couldn't resist stealing at least one.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel T1i and a EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 L IS USM, handheld.

Inspiration

I was just waiting outside the Singapore Zoo until my brother was getting the tickets. There was a long line. So I had my camera out and was looking for something or someone to take pictures of. This little girl immediately caught my attention.

Editing

Little bit of global RAW processing with Adobe Camera RAW and then I converted it to black and white using Adobe Photoshop CS6. Other than that, everything else stayed the same.

In my camera bag

Up until recently I was using a Rebel T1i and a few EF-S lenses. Now I shoot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and I carry four lenses. EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 L IS USM, EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM, EF 24-105 L IS USM, EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I pack my flashers depending on where I'm travelling. Most of the time, they stay behind. With everything packed, including my laptop, it comes close to 10 kilos (22 lbs). The tripod adds a few more kilos and I always carry mine. It's heavy but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Feedback

It would be fair to say that I'm more of a landscape/wildlife photographer. That being said, I do occasionally take pictures of other subjects, which I'm sure is true for all of us. When an opportunity presents itself, take the shot. If I was worrying about it being middle of the day with harsh lighting, I wouldn't have this picture today. For pictures like this, a long lens is preferred. I was able to take this from quite a distance away. Candid opportunities are all around us. Just be respectful to others around you.
