Gorgeous. Worthy of the win. (Just because I am biased doesn't mean I'm mistaken.)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in rural Pennsylvania (Amish country)

Time

This photo was taken on September 21, 2013 at 2:15 p.m. I tagged along with a friend who goes riding at a barn close to where I lived at the time.

Lighting

It was a slightly overcast day, the last day of the summer. The weather worked rather well considering that I took this just past noon. I didn't use any lighting equipment.

Equipment

I took this with a Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 L IS USM. No other equipment were used.

Inspiration

It was a regular weekend like any other but I really wanted to go out and shoot some photos while the weather was nice. So I ended up going to the barn where one of my friends goes horse riding. I came back with this picture.

Editing

Yes, although nothing major. I converted it to black and white and did a few contrast adjustments. Other than that, it was basically left untouched.

In my camera bag

The love of my life, Canon 5D Mark III. The nifty fifty for light shooting and portraits. The 17-40mm L for landscapes. The 70-300mm L for wildlife shooting. The 24-105mm L as my favorite walk-around lens. Other than that, few filters and a whole lot of cables than I care to admit.

Feedback

Details are important. I doubt this picture would look much interesting if I captured the entire beast. I wanted something that shows speed and raw power. I also didn't want the action completely frozen. So I picked a mildly fast shutter speed (1/400). I think it gives a nice balance between frozen action and still a sense of speed with slightly blurred out dust particles. I would say try focusing on something that you normally wouldn't think of. Moving parts make good stories, and if it's just right, they add a little bit of mystery to the image.
