Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph at my daughter's home.

Time

It was evening; after the sun went down, so it would be easy to photograph with flash and not capture the background elements which would have been distracting.

Lighting

Waiting until the sun went down I used one flash and a reflector to bounce only a little of the light to the opposite side. I didn't want a ton of light and wanted to keep the mood very mellow and relaxing.

Equipment

I used my canon xsi, 18-55mm lens, ttl on my camera facing directly camera left set on the minimum setting used as my trigger to fire the ttl on stand to the left of the subject, and reflector at camera right on a stand.

Inspiration

My daughter was about a month from giving birth and I wanted to capture some nice maternity photographs that might help my portraiture photography business. We had another session after this one that included her husband and son; we wanted to capture a nice variety of maternity photographs for the Alivia's baby book.

Editing

I did convert this image from color to black and white. The majority of maternity photographs that I have captured look much better in black and white, in my opinion. When in color the skin on the belly seems to be too red, and the veins pop more.

In my camera bag

I bring my canon 7d, canon xsi, 18-55mm lens, 75-300 lens, 2 ttl's, my tripod, and I now have some filters that I am excited to use very soon.

Feedback

My only advice is to move the lighting around, create different direction of lighting, concentrate on the subject matter and surroundings. As in this photograph I didn't want the doorway/kitchen to be visible in any of the images, so I set the lighting to where it would only illuminate the subject. Be mindful of distractions in the background.
