I always love an animal against a black background. It is such a powerful technique for isolating the subject. The sharpness and texture in this shot are very nice!

Thank you, I was lucky enough to be quite close to my subject at the time, it was very sleepy having just eaten.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot of an Asian Short Clawed Otter was taken at a wildlife park in Cornwall, England

Time

This was taken about mid-morning. The otters had just been fed so were preparing to take a nap, you can see this one is looking very sleepy.

Lighting

It was a bright but overcast day so there was no glare from the sun which helps to bring up the otters coat.

Equipment

My trusty Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200. It's very light weight & easy to carry around all day

Inspiration

Otters are very inspirational. They have such cute faces & each one is a seperate little character.

Editing

I wanted the otter to 'pop' out at you so I have used a vinegarette mask to blacken the back ground

In my camera bag

I am a very lazy photographer & usually only carry my camera. I do keep a tripod in my car but this rarely comes out.

Feedback

Have patience to sit & watch your subjects. Once they are settled with you being around they act much more naturally & make better images.
