Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot at Crater Lake at Discovery Point.

Time

Morning, around 5:45 a.m., sunrise.

Lighting

Morning sunrise with clouds — what could be better? This image is taken early summer, when the sun rises on the other side of the lake from Discovery Point (north east).

Equipment

Pentax K-5 and the DA 10-17 fisheye zoom, with a fiesol tripod and ballhead.

Inspiration

Sunrises at Crater Lake in late spring early summer photographed from Discovery Point can be quite special if there's the right amount of clouds.

Editing

Processed in Lightroom. Brought up shadows, clarity and did some miscellaneous dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

My main camera nowadays is the Pentax KP. Whatever lenses I take depends on what and where I'm shooting. For longer trips I usually bring my zoom kit, which includes the Pentax DA 12-24, Pentax DA 16-85, and Pentax DA 55-300 PLM. For local landscapes I often go with a light-weight prime kit, which includes the Pentax DA 15, the Pentax DA 21, and the Pentax DA 35 Macro. Speciality lenses include the Rokinon 10mm f2.8, the Pentax DA 10-17 fisheye zoom, and 50 and 100mm macro lenses. For wildlife, I use the Pentax DA* 300 and DA 1.4x converter. For zoo photography, I often make use of the Tamron 70-200 f2.8. And for flowers I use an old 50mm f1.2 with extension tubes or the Pentax F 85mm Soft.

Feedback

For landscapes it's all about the light. For this particular shot, I wanted clouds in the sky. In the summer, Crater Lake is mostly sunny, particularly in mornings. So I waited for a weekend where clouds were in the forecast. Don't worry if the forecast is mostly cloudy. To the east of Crater Lake is a large desert, which rarely gets cloudy in the summer. So if it's mostly cloudy at Crater Lake, nevertheless you'll likely see some sun at the sunrise from the east.
