Location

In Crater Lake National Park, at Discovery Point.

Time

5:30 in the morning, at sunrise.

Lighting

Sunrise with clouds: it doesn't get any better when you get that mixture.

Equipment

Pentax K-5, Pentax DA 10-17 f3.5-4.5 fisheye zoom lens, Feisol tripod.

Inspiration

I had seen images of Crater Lake shot after freshly fallen snow, and wanted to shoot under such conditions. For years, when at Crater Lake, I would scout for positions, angles, FOV to shoot a sunrise after freshly fallen snow. I came up with the idea of fisheye shot at Discovery Point. Then it was simply waiting for a time when I could access Discovery Point after fresh snow (sometime in June is the only time this is likely to happen). After waiting for several years, in June of 2012, the weather forecast snow showers for the first weekend in summer. Went up to Crater Lake and on a chilly Sunday morning, got this shot which I had previsualized years before.

Feedback

Try to previsualize how a specific shot might look under different weather conditions (i.e., clouds, sunrise, sunset, snow, etc.). Then return to that sight when you have the best chance to get kind of light and weather conditions to help realize your vision.
