A couple of friends and I went aurora spotting on Friday night. Needless to say, I didn't get anything even remotely aurora-esque.

Behind The Lens

Location

Del Norte Redwoods, on the Damnation Creek trail.

Time

Late morning, in August.

Lighting

Lighting was ideal for redwoods: fog giving way to beams of sunlight. In summer, particularly in August, the fog can hang for hours in the forests of the Del Norte Redwoods. You just have to wait for that magical when the sunlight begins peaking through.

Equipment

Olympus EM-5, M. Zukio 9-18 f4-5.6 lens, Feisol tripod and ball head.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture beautiful images of the redwoods near where I live

Editing

Minor changes in lightroom, mostly having to do with exposure values

In my camera bag

Pentax K-5iis, Pentax DA 15 f4 Limited lens, standard zoom lens, other lenses, cameras as necessary for specific shoot.

Feedback

The ideal conditions to shoot redwoods is when the top of the trees are cloaked in fog. In the summer, a low ceiling of clouds is typical along the north california coast, where most of the largest redwoods are found. The trick is to find a grove at the elevation that touches the low ceiling of clouds. There are higher elevation groves in sections of Prairie Creek Redwoods, in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove (of Bald Hills Road near Orick), and in the Del Norte groves along the side of Highway 101, south of Crescent City. The groves with their tree tops sticking in the clouds are much more photogenic. And when the fog begins to thin out, sun beams can magically illuminate the trees, as in this picture.
