Artist Point on the lower falls of the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park is a marvel to behold. At a certain time in the morning (between 8-9am if my memory serves me correctly), the sun's rays hit the mist of the falls and create a rainbow. I highly suggest asking a park ranger or guide what time this occurs so you can get similar shots.
If there's anything I've learned, years after snapping this photograph, it's that we have to cherish our planet and treat it with respect. As I embark on my 29th year, the preservation of our environment has become increasingly more important to me. I want my children and future descendants to be able to see this world without worrying about its demise. As an amateur photographer, I've taken to this hobby in an effort to immortalize all that survives in this world so that future generations can also appreciate the significance of our planet.

I took this photo at Artist Point in Yellowstone National Park during a visit with my family in 2009.Time
We woke up at 4am to drive over by 8am, trying to catch some misty morning views and the wildlife as they hunted for breakfast. I was able to zoom in for this shot and capture the brilliant colors of the rainbow that only appears between 8-9am as the Sun's rays pierce the mist at the end of the falls.Lighting
We made sure to wake up early in order to catch the optimal light needed to bring out the colors of the falls. No one ever said getting the perfect shot was easy, and most of the time it's pure luck. But we knew that the morning was going to have beautiful weather and we made sure to be there at the right time. Knowing the best times of day to shoot is a must, particularly when photographing landscapes.Equipment
This was when I first became interested in photography so I actually used my dad's old Nikon D50 and a starter kit lens! I made sure to put on a lens filter at my father's recommendation. But this photo is from my early photography days!Inspiration
Honestly, it was just beautiful. It was the first time I'd seen a landscape this dramatic and I just started clicking away. Sometimes the moment itself is enough to inspire a shot.Editing
Absolutely, I always think about the post-processing phase. I re-edited this photo a couple of years after I took it because I needed to get more comfortable with the programs. I don't want to give too much away, but I spent a lot of time emphasizing the colors of the rainbow at the end of the falls and highlighting the water itself. I enhanced the shadows of the surrounding rocks and cliffs to make the subject shine. In my camera bag
I've moved on from Nikon to Sony mirror less, so that's my go-to camera. I also recently got the GoPro Hero 4, and it's definitely come in handy. I have three lenses: 16-55 mm, 55-200 mm, and 35 mm f/1.8 which is my new main lens. On top of that, I always have my remote control for night shots, a tripod, spare flash, and plenty of batteries.Feedback
Ask people who really know the surrounding area about prime locations and the best time to shoot. In this case, the hotel staff really helped us out. Take what is most necessary to your shoot for the day and plan ahead so you aren't spending time searching for equipment. When I go through my bag, everything is organized so I spend about 5 seconds getting something out. And finally, have fun! If you miss a shot it's not the end of the world. Just look ahead for the next one.
