Location
This picture was taken during a wildlife safari... Just kidding! It was taken in my backyard. We just moved to an acre of land in Arizona and it was my first time taking my camera outside with my son to explore.Time
So, for this picture, I went out with my son about midday and waited until the cloud coverage was right so the sun wasn't too harsh.Lighting
The lighting was all natural! Normally, I don't like taking pictures in the middle of the day, but cloudy days are one of my favorite because the lighting is always diffused.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 and a 18-300 mm lens. No other equipment used.Inspiration
As a family photographer, I am always looking for beautiful pictures that represent the children that I work with. The day that I took this picture, I had initially wanted to get a gorgeous picture of my son, looking serene and like something you might find on Pinterest. Except, when I went to take the picture, he decided that he wanted to be a tiger. He was also covered in paint and dirt from pretty extensive mud-pie action on the porch. So instead of trying to force a picture, I just let him keep "scaring" my camera, and I got a picture that defines exactly who he is today as a two year old wild-child.Editing
I did very minimal work with this picture. I took out a few background distractions and I enhanced the colors, but there wasn't much else that I needed to improve. In my camera bag
Oh goodness, don't unlock Pandora's box! I have many different lenses, but my go-to favorites are my 35 mm, 50 mm and my 18-300. I also carry bubbles and whatever left over prop or snack that I was using during my latest session!Feedback
Okay, so one of my biggest pet peeves with photographers especially when working with children is the tendency to try and make them into something that they aren't and make them do something that they don't want to. It can be overwhelmingly tempting to ask the child to smile, but usually you will get really forced looking faces. Obviously my son is used to my camera (I practically stuffed it in the womb with him), but one of the best ways to get a fun and natural expression like this is to take the pressure off. Don't stuff your kid in clothes they wouldn't normally wear, don't change up their routine. Just follow them to where THEY want to be and then let them interact with you. Turn it into a game. For instance with this shot, I let my son feel powerful by sitting below him and asking him to growl. As he was perched up on his seat, he felt like a lion, and I'm pretty sure that it shows!
