Location
This picture was taken in a pretty remote desert location near my home, but, let's just call it "Never Land" :)Time
If I remember correctly, this image was taken around 3-4 pm on a cloudy summer day. It was just after I had finished playing with my son (pictured). I wanted to capture his devilish little smile because it's one of his most distinctive characteristics.Lighting
The lighting was exceptionally simple. I relied on the natural light which was behind my son. When working with my son or other small children for that matter, I rarely ever use anything that could distract the child. I will only use a reflector if I have a few other people around to help me with the child so my team and I can keep the smiles natural.Equipment
For this image, I used a Nikon D7000 and a little bit of pixie dust!Inspiration
In this picture, my three-year old son and I finished his first-ever chapter book, "Peter Pan". My son bears a striking resemblance to the crazy-haired red headed lost boy, so much of his play revolved around mimicking his new hero. Just like Peter, my son was trying to fly out of a tree when I captured him just long enough to preserve his precious innocence forever.Editing
I kept this image simple and used minimal editing to clean up excess dirt on his face (boys, I swear!), to sharpen his eyes and to saturate the colors to give it an extra "pop".In my camera bag
My bag is akin to Hermione's purse in Harry Potter. In regards to equipment, I always carry my camera, my 18-300mm, my 35mm and my 50mm. I have toddler taming snacks, bobby-pins, bubbles, at least two Ensure drinks (in case I can't make it to lunch), and bits and pieces of things from various other sessions.Feedback
I have a special love affair with eyes, so I will purposely spend my time focused on them. I tend to craft images with the focus set completely on the eyes (through composition, colors, ect). For this image, I used my 50mm and had my son rest his face on the tree next to him. This helps to keep the child still enough to get the desired clarity. After that, I let my son's eyes relax enough that they didn't look unnatural and waited until just before the big smile.
