Beautiful. Wonderful moment. We're the trees close to home and a favourite with photographers or did you find them by chance? ????

Stiff competition for the "Golden Hour" contest, since the golden hour elevates everyone's capability. Yet this shot stands out. I think the simplicity and starkness of the subject, combined with the foreground interest of shadow, detail, and a golden snow, are what makes this photo striking!!

Behind The Lens

Location
This was taken in the extreme north eastern area of California, near a small town called Davis Creek
Time
The sun was setting early on a very cold winter day. I imagine it was around 5 p.m.
Lighting
The lighting is what made this image. The sun setting across a crystallized snowy field and the extra long shadows of the small tree made the entire composition work.
Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mk III and Canon 24-70mm L Series lens. It was shot hand held (which was quite the challenge as it was around 10 degrees F, if memory serves). The lens also had a polarizing filter.
Inspiration
The photo demanded to be taken. I was simply driving home from Gma's and it jumped out at me. I turned around, found a safe place to pull off the road, ran about 500 yds (was afraid of losing that golden moment of light), and ran back before I froze my fingers off. It was one of those wonderful moments of being in the right place at the right time and actually having my gear with me.
Editing
I process very little, with every picture I use. I put a curves layer on this with very subtle adjustments and a tad bit of sharpening. If I tinker in Photoshop too much, I feel the piece starts to become more digital art, than photography. I really prefer photography and try to get things right in the camera, as much as possible.
In my camera bag
I have 4x7 ND Filters, 24-70, 70-300 and 100mm Macro lenses (L Series), Canon Flash, cleaning items, batteries, polarizers, blue/gold polarizer, UV filters, remote triggers, Gary Fong diffuser and snoot and of course the 5D.
Feedback
This picture really was about timing and luck. This scene was only there for a few moments and all of the variables were just right. My advice would always have your gear with you, always be on the look out and never let it slip away. I didn't want to turn around and delay my trip, I certainly didn't want to get out of the warm truck and run 500 yds in freezing weather, but I knew I would regret it if I didn't. In the end, it was well worth it.
