Location
Smith Rock State Park, OregonTime
This was taken around mid-day in the fall.Lighting
The light that day was unexpressive and flat, but the textures really made the B+W image come to life.Equipment
Canon 5D MkIII, Canon 24-70mm L Series Lens, Manfrotto Tripod, B+W Polarizer, Singh Ray ND Gradient 4x6Inspiration
Smith Rock is an otherworldly, magical place that is an inspiration in itself. The day I took this photo, the air was cool and the water was flowing quietly through the value. It was a weekday and that coupled with the cool temperatures made the park sparsely populated, so it was just a bit more magical than usual.Editing
Very little, I'm a bit "old school" in that I still use filters and techniques to try and capture images "in camera" as much as possible, in the field. This images was minimally processed with Photoshop to give it a little more of a dynamic range, as the light was difficult that day.In my camera bag
Canon bodies and L Series Lenses, filters of various types, extra batteries, cleaning equipment, head lamp, waterproof cover, flash and extra batteries.Feedback
Smith Park is a very dynamic, photogenic place. The lighting can be cooperative or exactly opposite, so timing is important. It can also be very busy during the season and lend itself to Sport Photography as well, as there's usually an abundance of rock climbers in the park in summer months. There is also some great wildlife opportunities on the quiet days, if you're patient.
