Sunflowers are lively and pulchritudinous for a brief period of time before they turn destitute and wilted. However, in that glorious period, they emulate the sensation of joy. I desired to capture that feeling of nostalgic happiness in my viewer’s soul in this photograph, entitled “Joy,” to convey my disposition while observing the stunning nature of a sunflower at peak. The spirit of joy is prevalent in nature, but it requires pausing and admiring the subtle beauty of the outdoors.

Location
I took this photograph in my backyard in the Midwest United States.Time
This was taken around midday a couple of summers ago. Usually I avoid shooting at that time unless it's overcast, but the light the sun cast upon the petals of this sunflower were too stunning to pass up.Lighting
I always try to create a powerful mood within my photography that my viewers can experience with the same emotions I felt when shooting it. In this particular shot, the soft sunlight catching on the petals and the composition of the piece gave me the feeling of joy - which in turn gave me inspiration for giving it the title "Joy."Equipment
To create this image, I used a Canon 60D and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.Inspiration
I am tremendously inspired by nature. The fact that such beautiful details exist in nature astounds me and makes me desire to capture the details of life.Editing
The only post processing I have done on this photograph is color correction and spot removal. In my camera bag
These days I typically pack a Canon 5D Mark iii, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8, Canon 50mm f/1.4, and Canon 20-35mm lenses. In addition, I pack an assortment of filters (ND, Polarizers, UV, etc). Depending on the type of scenery I am aiming to shoot, I will pack a tripod if necessary.Feedback
Look for the details in life and strive to capture them in a realistic and accurate manner. Overall, humanity is so rushed for success and fame that the small, yet stunning, details of life are commonly overlooked. Capture life in a way that others do not see and show them what they are passing by in life without realizing. In short: make people look and floor them with what you create.
