Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph one day while I was walking through my backyard. I saw a Monarch flying near me and I watched to see where it landed. I ran inside to get my camera and when I came back outside I crouched on the ground and waited for it to turn in the direction I wanted it to.

Time

I had been walking through my yard around 3:30 and saw this monarch. Typically I avoid shooting midday since the light is harsh. However, I saw this Monarch butterfly and had to capture it. Luckily the sun was behind clouds.

Lighting

I typically dislike shooting in the middle of the day since the natural light available is harsh. However, I use natural light whenever possible, so I work around unfavorable conditions. I would definitely recommend shooting on cloudy days. Clouds create a massive soft-box and have the ability to reduce shadows and over/underexposure.

Equipment

I handheld this shot with my Canon 60D and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

This photograph, like all of my shots, are candid. I love capturing natural scenes, so butterflies and other fast-moving subjects are exciting. I love capturing shots with color and fragility or the opposite with darkness and sharpness, so this is a photograph I enjoy due to its dainty and colorful nature.

Editing

The only post-processing I do is with Lightroom since I primarily shoot in RAW. However, I only alter detail, exposure/contrast, and distracting details to the photo (i.e. Spot Removal).

In my camera bag

I typically pack my Canon 5D Mark iii, a 50mm f/1.4, a 70-200mm f/2.8, three macro extensions, and a few filters. I then strap a lightweight tripod onto the back of my pack to make it more convenient to hike with.

Feedback

Don't think great shots are sitting on the other side of the country or even world. Sometimes the best shots are right in your backyard or neighborhood. You don't need to go to a fancy location to get a professional quality photograph. The quality of the photograph is dependent on your own abilities as a photographer and how you take the shot. I try to photograph subjects I have walked by innumerable times. The location doesn't matter - your ability as a photographer does.
