Shot around 10am. The light was not too bad but the contrast was certainly good. .Lighting
Having a strong contrast between the subject and the background is a great way to define an image. This is a very simple example of having a subject without distraction.Equipment
I'm a canon User - this is my favourite lens - the 70-200 f2.8 - its fast, clean and always in reach.Inspiration
I was actually photographing some boats on the river, there was a small sailing race on. A few shadows came over and as I looked up there were a greater number of Pelicans coming down to land on a lesser number of perches. They squawked and argued until the most intimidating won. There was time to shoot these guys as they argued.Editing
Post processing- I use Lightroom most of the time for my edits. This was already well exposed and all it required was a little contrast adjustment, namely to tone down the background brightness.In my camera bag
I carry a small backpack that has 2 bodies and a few lenses. sure it can be heavy if you're going for a trek but generally it is fine. If I am going a distance I'll rationalise the weight and just take 2 lenses....inside the bag one body has the 70-200 on it all the time, this saves a lot of time when something pops up quickly. The other body usually has a wide zoom - either 11-24 or a 17-40, both great wide lenses. So, generally I am ready most of the time for pretty much anything. I also keep a 50mm 1.8 and a 100mm macro, a couple of 600ex flashes, a bunch of batteries and a couple of filters- A 1000x ND and a polariser.Feedback
To be ready quickly is the key to a lot of photography, particularly exterior action. A lot of time can be spent waiting and some of the time it is for nothing, But, every now and then you are just at the right spot at the right time with the right gear. Be ready. Sometime the action is behind you.
