Location
This photo was taken during a family Christmas gathering. This is my nephew's Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Penelope. This is a home she is very comfortable in but she wasn't too sure about all the other "people" who were there. She wanted to be in the middle of things but deciding it was time to take a rest, but still maintain a watchful eye on things.Time
It was late in the afternoon. The dogs were getting a little tired and had calmed down a bit. Penelope plopped herself down and wasn't concerned about me getting to floor level with her.Lighting
This was in a house and I was only using available light. I didn't want to risk the alarm of using flash. So I cranked up the ISO setting and used a low fstop and slow shutter speed. I was happy with how it turned out. .Equipment
I used a Nikon D7200 with a Nikkor 18-140mm zoom. No tripod or flash used.Inspiration
I noticed the dog while laying as she was, was still following movement with her eyes. I thought it might be a good shot. I actually just set the camera on the floor in front of me as I was sitting in the floor to get the shot.Editing
I believe I tone mapped this image in Photmatix and then played with the black and white settings until I got the image the way I liked it.In my camera bag
At the time I took this photo, a Nikon D7100 and a D7200. I have a nice Nikkor 85-400mm zoom, wide angle 10-24mm, as well as a 18-140mm zoom. I now carry a D7500 as well.Feedback
Think about the angle any time you shoot an image. I think the angle is what made this photo. I got down on the dog's level and was able to provide some depth of field with the tree and presents in the background. I entered a color version of this same image in the contest and it didn't get much love at all. So sometimes it is all about the post processing choices as well.
