Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Point Arena Lighthouse along the northern California coast in November.

Time

We arrived late in the day in order to take advantage of the low light conditions. My goal was to give this photo a romantic, ethereal feeling.

Lighting

Under low light conditions such as this, a tripod is almost always necessary in order to maintain a crisp, clear image.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Nikon D750 full frame DSLR camera with a Nikkor 28-300mm zoom lens mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

I love landscape photography, seascapes in particular. The Pacific coast in California offers endless opportunities for creative photography. The numerous lighthouses that dot the coastline are an added bonus.

Editing

Lightroom and Photoshop were both used to enhance the evening mood of this photo.

In my camera bag

My current camera of choice is a Nikon D750 full frame DSLR. I usually use my Nikkor 28-300mm lens which I find to be extremely versatile in most situations. I also have a Nikkor 24-120mm and a macro lens that I use on occasion. I always have 2 64gb memory cards in my camera with a spare 32gb card in my bag as a backup since I shoot in both Raw and jpg Fine. Additionally, I always carry a fully charged spare battery, battery charger, UV and polarizing filters for all lenses, a Tiffen variable ND filter, the Cokin filter system, a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, a remote release, and cleaning supplies.

Feedback

Landscape photographers often have the luxury of returning to a particular location at different times of the day or night (or seasons) in order to capture a particular scene under different lighting or weather conditions. But since you can't always count on a sunset or a full moon planning ahead is also often required, along with a bit of luck! However, in most instances landscapes are best captured in either early morning, late afternoon or evening in order to take advantage of the "golden hour" when the light is soft and most pleasing. This usually reduces the amount of post processing that would otherwise be required to make an average photo into a great photo.
