Springtime in Oregon means the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn - about 40 minutes south of Portland. I try to go annually - and depending on what day you go, you'll find blue skies, you'll find hail, you'll find driving winds and tearing rain, and sometimes all of the above within moments. Because it's spring. In Oregon. This is a simple tulip after one of those terrifying downpours. And yes, I had to lay in between the rows of flowers, in the mud, to shoot at this angle. Sometimes a girl has to get dirty to get the shot. :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm in Woodburn, Oregon, about 40 minutes outside of Portland.

Time

This was take on the perfect spring afternoon. Clouds here, blue skies there, occasional showers, and lots of mud. Weekday afternoons and rainy days are the best times to avoid the crowds.

Lighting

All natural, baby! Sometimes nature does the hard work, and all you have to do is be lucky enough to catch it.

Equipment

I used very little common sense - as I was laying on my back in the mud. In hand was my old D300, a 105 macro lens, and nothing else but patience for the light.

Inspiration

It's tough to go to such a popular place and find something new to look at, it's been done. I've done it, other photogs have done it - so what can I do on this particular day, with this weather and light, to make a photo I enjoy?

Editing

No - this is one of those rare "sooc" shots! I may have straightened it a hair, but this is essentially as seen in my camera.

In my camera bag

Currently a D800, 50mm 1.4, 20mm 2.8, 80-400mm, SB900, some step-up rings, a CPL, a 6 stop ND filter, memory cards, batteries, a snack, water, my iPhone, lens cloth, tiny sewing scissors, safety pins.

Feedback

New perspectives help. It's easy to look out over the fields, but messy to lay in between the rows of flowers. Sometimes getting messy is half the fun of photography, and I try to never wear anything irreplaceable. When everyone else is looking down, it can help to look up.
