Believe it or not this photo of the shoebill stork was taken at the zoo. I tell no lie, the zoo. Over the many years of taking photos at the zoo I have learned there is an art to zoo photography and the greatest skill needed is a lot of patience.Time
This photo was not taken at the ideal time of day when the light was sweet but mid morning when the sun was almost overhead.Lighting
Although I did not capture this image at a time when the light was sweet, but I watched the shoebill for quite some time and waited until he moved into a spot where the sun was hitting him just right through the shadows of some trees.Equipment
I was able to set my shutter an ISO to an adequate speed so that the image was not too noisy and I could handhold my camera for the shot. On this day I was using a Canon 5 D mark 3 with the canon 100-400 L lens.Inspiration
I am a great lover of nature and animals and love photography whether it be birds or beasts of any kind. This shoebill stork is such an exotic bird not normally seen in North America but here he was looking so beautiful at the zoo.Editing
After capturing this beautiful bird I opened the raw file in Lightroom and followed a basic workflow of cropping and lighting adjustments then I opened the image in photoshop and fine tuned the image using a curves adjustment layer. In my camera bag
The first thing I always pack for wildlife photography is my Canon 5D and my 100-400 telephoto. I will also pack a 1.4 extended, extra batteries and SD cards. I always bring a tripod and a remote too.Feedback
The zoo can provide great opportunities for photographers to capture fantastic images. The subjects are contained and used to people watching them and taking photos. They don’t get spooked easily and they provide great opportunities whether you are practicing techniques or an avid zoo shutterbug. The biggest piece of advice is to be patient sit and watch and wait for the animals to move into an area where your composition or lighting will be more pleasing for your photo.l
