Location
This photo was taken at a Relay for life event at my school. It was on Halloween, so the kids were dressed up. This little guy was so animated and eating up the camera. I took a series of shots of him which all told a story. This was my favorite. I loved the way the hat was covering his eye along with the expression on his face.Time
It was mid morning. All the little preschoolers embarked on a fun day of games and treats to raise money for the cancer society. I had my camera in hand looking for photo ops when I came upon the group of 3 year olds as they waited in line for the bowling game...As he waited he danced and chatted and smiled and flirted with my camera. I had a telephoto so I was a little ways from him, so he felt comfortable while he hammed it up.Lighting
The ambient lighting was an overcast day, but I coupled it with my flash on a stroboframe.Equipment
I took this photo with a Canon 7d, with a 70-200 canon L series lens set at an aperture of 2.8 at 100 ISO. I stopped down and used some manual fill in flash from my 600 exrt speedlite set at 1/16th power.Inspiration
This little guy was a ham...smiling and acting silly knowing that my camera was pointing at him.Editing
I did minimal post processing.. cropped slightly, boosted the contrast, burned in his cheek because it was a little hot and adjusted the levels. In my camera bag
Well, my camera of choice, until just recently was my Canon 7 until I recently updated to a Canon 5D mark 3.and that will now be in my bag, along with my Canon L series 70-200 f 2.8 lens, and my Tamron 28-70 f 2.8 lens. I also like to bring along my 600 EXRT speed-lite and transmitter, some polarizing and neutral density filters, along with reflectors.Feedback
My advice for shooting kids is use a telephoto lens with a wide aperture opening to allow for background blur. This helps create impact and emphasis on your subject. Keep your subject out of the sun and put your camera on continuous shooting so you don't miss a shot. Make sure your shutter speed is above 1/250 of a second to reduce camera shake and capture action. And last, focus on the eyes. I use back button focus. It makes it easier to track a moving subject.
