Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my home, where my wife and I, also a photographer, sometimes set up small sets to create our small works.

Time

I don't think the time is very important in these cases: the light here is entirely artificial. It is a studio flash with a large 120cm octagonal softbox.

Lighting

As I said above, the light here is all artificial. The scheme I used is very simple and effective, a light at the top left of the model at 45° in order to create that effect that many call "Rembrandt light"

Equipment

The equipment is this: the camera, a Sony A7III, the lens which I believe was a very simple Tamron 28-75 f2.8 zoom, a studio flash with 120cm softbox and relative remote control. behind the model a canvas background that reproduces an old wall

Inspiration

We were in the pandemic period and I wanted to photograph a girl wearing a mask with an expression of strength and sweetness, so I asked Ionela, who lives in my condominium under my apartment, to lend herself for the project. I have a version of this photo with and without the mask, I intended to display the two photos together.

Editing

I have my own very simple post production workflow which consists of removing small defects, while preserving the texture, with the Photoshop removal tool. I create a vignette and correct the colors as I like them, enhancing lights and contrasts. However, the detail of the various steps is a little secret of my work that I cannot reveal to everyone.

In my camera bag

Generally I have my camera in my bag, in particular I have a Sony a7ii and an a7iii and I will probably soon buy the a7iv and then a couple of lenses, which I change depending on what I'm going to photograph. I have a predilection for prime lenses, but for this type of photography with studio lights a good zoom is more than sufficient.

Feedback

To take similar photos I am inspired by Renaissance paintings, the Pre-Raphaelites, the romantic portrait, there are many painters who can be a source of inspiration, such as Vermer, Rembrandt, the Renaissance.
