Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska.

Time

The photo was taken in late afternoon.

Lighting

In winter the sun is at a low angle through much of the day in Alaska making for side lighting that helps to expose what relief exists in mountains that are totally white with snow.

Equipment

A Nikon 300s and an 18 to 200 mm Nikkor lens.

Inspiration

The contrast between the near totally white mountains and the almost black confers was so stark as to make the subject interesting.

Editing

Because the subject was about the contrast between the white snow and the dark trees I converted the photo to black and white.

In my camera bag

In my sling bag I carry a Nikon D500 and a Nikkor 18 to 300 mm lens. This combination enables me to photograph in a moments notice in wide angle or telephoto under often rugged field conditions. Because I rarely ever take the lens off in the field I also do not have to worry about getting dust specs on the image processor.I will sometimes also carry an SB900 external flash, a carbon fibre tripod and a couple of pocket wizards. In my sling bag is also an 11 x 18 inch knee pad which I use to sit, kneel or lie on for taking low angle photos. It doubles as my camera padding inside the sling bag the rest of the time. (Most of the bag's original padding i removed to make room for it).

Feedback

I am always asking myself when taking photos what makes the subject interesting. Does it tell a story? Does it contain emotional content? Is it strong enough to stand alone as a picture on a wall?
