Location
It was on El Hierro (Canary Islands). We have been hiking there with friend in early February. We were both interested in photography so our bivouacks were always in beautifull places- here on the mirador -view point. This night was very windy, hard to pitch the tent. Sky not clear, but cloudes were fast so sometimes we have seen the stars. We were 1000 meters above sea level and it was very cold.Time
in February days are shorter even so much south, so we were awake before sunrise and we had few hours of the darkness at the evening. This photograph was taken at the evening, just when last sunlight dissapeared under horizon.Lighting
I overexposed this photograph a bit to see more of the coast, This was dark night, without moon, camera shows more then naked eye. I could not get sharp stars because tripod was moved by the wind so I just kept camera on the stone.Equipment
I used Canon 5D Mk3 with Canon 17-40 L f4Inspiration
after all my hiking trips in the winter I am back with many night photographs. In summer days are to short and it is hard to see so much of darkness in hiking trip, when I walk with heavy backpack I also need to rest, Winter is great to see nights, I enjoy all of them, with moon, without moon, with clear sky and with some clouds. Even cloude nights give some chances to play with light, so winter for me always means night photographs.Editing
Very dark nights always surprise me with colours, usually photograph is different then what I see, so I feel free to experiment with white balance. Beside it I do not make many changes, just RAW procesing and a bit noice reductionIn my camera bag
Normally I have Canon 5D, Canon 70-200 f4 L, Canon 17-40 L f4 (or Tamron 17-35 f 2,8-4), tripod and many extra batteries.Feedback
Sometimes nights are so dark that it is impossible to see anything but black, but camera has other sensitivity, so it is always good to increase ISO or to longer the time and wait. Photography can show something invisible.
