Thank you - in a meadow in Austria on sunrise, but the location does not really matter here :).

Love your photos, many have a watercolor look is that a filter or Photoshop??

Thank you! No filters - no Photoshop. This wouldn't be allowed in major nature photo competitions where I sumbit my photos to as well :).

Nice colors and awesome shallow depth of field. The purple flower really draws the eye to your subject. Very nice work.

Location
I took this photo in Austria - not far from the Lake Neusiedl east of Vienna.Time
As like almost every time when I'm about to do a macro shooting I get up long before sunrise - here it has been like 3:30am in the morning to be there before sunrise to have the chance to find sleeping butterflies.Lighting
Morning light is the light I like most for macro photography. The first light of the day is soft and helps getting a balanced exposure.Equipment
For this photo I've used a Canon 5d Mk iii together with a Canon 180/3.5 L Macro. I've used a tripod, I've shot with manual focusing and using the live view for it. No flash or reflector was used.Inspiration
I always try to include the habitat of the butterfly in the picture. Many macro photographers try to get a uniform background, but I always try to fill the negative space with an interesting bokeh without distracting too much from the main subject. I've tried to get that butterfly with open wings before its first flight and was very happy I've managed to do that.Editing
There's not that much post processing in this shot as it was used in major nature competitions as well where post processing is very limited. I've developed the RAW in Ligthroom for some optimization in the histogram. In Photoshop I've used tonal correction and a little dodge & burn technique to brighten the butterfly. In my camera bag
Canon 5d Mkiii, Canon 16-35/4 L IS, Canon 50/1.4, Canon 135/2 L, Canon 180/3.5 L macro, Canon 400/2.8 L IS USM, bean bag, Sirui and Berlebach tripods, reflectors and diffusors, gradient filters, polarization filterFeedback
If you have an idea for a photo don't give up too early if it doesn't work the first time. Getting a waking up butterfly with open wings in that quality and such a bokeh isn't a thing you can get every day. To know how bokeh works is a special part of photography skills and there's still so much to know about it, but I love to play with it and experiment since a few years. Hundreds of hours of trying and failing brought me there and many more will be necessary.
