Location
This photo was taken in September 2015 at Yosemite National Park. The uniqueness that Yosemite offers is truly one of a kind. I hold this place very close to my heart because every trip is unique and I am just fortunate enough to have been able to visit this place multiple times.Time
This was probably during the early morning hours on a rainy/overcast day. The clouds offered some very unique photo opportunities!Lighting
I would have to say that the small amount of light that was able to peak through the clouds offered a beautiful glow to the low lying fog and the wet rocks. It really helped to bring out some contrast to what could have been a very flat and dull looking day.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D MK II placed on a tripod to get this shot. I could have hand held it because there was enough light to do so, but I already had it set on my tripod because the light was not consistent and I didn't want to have to worry about whether or not I would be able to hold the shot steady. This was shot using a 24-70mm Canon lens at f/2.8, 100 iso, 1/1000.Inspiration
The fog that wrapped around the mountain. It was such a unique experience to see how the fog wrapped around the mountain so perfectly. Really caught my eye and I just had to take a photo of it. The lighting at the time was also fantastic and the rain along with the lighting created a more dynamic shot.Editing
Yes, I did. I upped the contrast and dropped some of the highlights to give the clouds and the mountain more interest. That was the grunt of the post-processing work. Obviously a little tweak on the shadows to bring back the details in the trees below and a little adjustment to the exposure to help it pop since I dropped some of the highlights.In my camera bag
When it comes to nature photography I always bring the following: I have 2 bags. Osprey 38 hiking bag as well as my Low-pro photo sport 200. I bring 3 lenses: 14mm 24-70mm 70-200 Tripod: Manfrotto Carbon fiber tripod (roughly 3.5-4.5lbs) Variable Neutral Density Filter Polarizer Filter Remote shutter Bubble level GoPro Hero 3 Plus + 4 extra batteries Go-Pole for GoPro Clamp for Go-Pro Electrical tape (never know when you may need it) Plastic bag (in case you need to cover your camera and still want to shoot) Extra batteries (for camera, flash lights & remote shutter) Extra memory cards Flash Light & Head lamp Lens cloth Snacks are a must and of course water. I think thats pretty much most of the important things in my bag unless I am packing my full camping gear then there will be a few more items like clothing, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, etc.Feedback
Always be ready. I think the best shots are the shot you don't plan for. Most of my best shots are taken spontaneously because everything just lines up perfect for that brief period of time. You just have to be patient and keep your eyes open. See what the weather is doing, what direction the clouds are pushing, what direction the light will come from if it peaks through the clouds. Its all the small details that you may overlook if you are just expecting to be there for the perfect shot without being patient enough to wait for that moment to happen.
