Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the peak of Bearfence Mountain, Shenandoah National Park.

Time

It was early in the morning with low, dense clouds above. At first, we thought it would rain, but not a drop fell.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect in the early morning hours. It cast a beautiful, soft glow onto the model which really helped with adding details to her flowy dress. It also helps in creating the contrast between the model, the ground she sat on and the sky/clouds up above.

Equipment

Canon 5D MK II Canon 24-70 II Polarizing Filter to bring more details to the sky above since I was shooting this at a low to high angel No tripod was used. This was handheld

Inspiration

Sometimes nature tells you when to take a photograph and directs you on how to go about setting your composition. The moody clouds are what really pushed my direction for this photograph. The clouds worked perfectly with the flow of the dress and I knew then that I had to capture this moment.

Editing

Yes, I first was going to set this as a full black & white photograph. After some testing, I felt that a bit of sepia was needed to really set the mood that I wanted to express in this photo. I then soloed her out and bumped up the highlighted areas of her dress and face.

In my camera bag

All depends on how much hiking to a location it takes and what will be photographed. Normally I always carry the following. Canon 5D MK IV Canon 24-70mm II Canon 70-200mm II Polarizer and Neutral Density filters

Feedback

be patient and explore. Think outside the box and be willing to try new things. If you are out in nature then let mother nature guide you. Don't fixate too long, instead keep your eyes and mind open, but be ready to act quickly.
