These tulips were photographed during Tulip Time in Holland, MI at Kollen Park. It was perfectly sunny spring day. The tulips seem to be stretching toward the life sustaining sun.Time
This photo was taken at 1:30 in the afternoon on May 3, 2016 during my lunch hour. I took a ride through Holland, MI which is exploding with color this time of year. Collin Park is on the shoreline of Lake Macatawa.Lighting
I set the aperture to f20 to get a beautiful sun flare. I set the camera near the ground facing upward with my 16-35 set at 16mm. I had no idea what I was shooting until I looked at the screen. There was no way to look through the eye piece that close to the ground.Equipment
My Canon 1DX did not disappoint once again. The hardest part of the shot was holding the back focus button while releasing the shutter. I had to hold the camera in a rather awkward way. The 16-35 USM II lens takes fantastic photos wide open with a slight vignetting at the edges which I cropped out of this photo. I didn't use any flash or tripod. The 1/500 shutter speed captured a sharp image, even though the camera was handheld in an awkward position.Inspiration
Tulip Time in Holland, MI is worth any photographers time and effort. The town is filled with tulips in parks, along boulevards, filling tulip gardens, and decorating resident's yards. I love to capture these gorgeous flowers from interesting angles and there are plenty of them to experiment with.Editing
I didn't do much post-processing. It's not difficult to capture wonderful photos in camera when the subjects are so beautiful. I did crop out the vignetting typical of the 16-35 wide open on a full frame camera. In my camera bag
I carry two bodies my Canon 70D which introduced me to the world of photography and my Canon 1dx which is testimony to my new found addiction. I carry three lens 16-365mm, 24-70 mm, and 70-200 mm all three lens are 2.8 ff, II USM. I carry the Lee Big Stopper and a full set of grad filters for those magic landscape shots. My tripod is a Gitzo w/RRS BH 40 all loaded up in my F-stop backpack.Feedback
Come to Holland, MI the second week in May and tickle your eyes with an explosion of colors and endless variety of shapes of these long stemmed beauties. Follow Tulip Lane which winds throughout this Dutch immigrant town. And as an added bonus the blossoms on the trees will be at full bloom too.
