Location
Every year Friesian Connection has an open house to showcase their stallions, which are available for breeding. The owners good friends of mine and they let me take photos of their beautiful creatures throughout the year.Time
This photo was taken at 10:30 a.m. on a cloudy day. The sun had ducked behind the clouds for this shot.Lighting
Photographing dark subjects on sunny days is definitely a challenge, the highlights and shadows create a high dynamic range, which the human eye can process, but the camera is challenged. Waiting for the clouds shroud the sun helps lower the dynamic range in the photo. Still, some post processing is essential when photographing these black stallions.Equipment
This shot was taken with a EF 70-200 mm 2.8f II lens mounted on a Canon 7D Mark II. I hand held the camera using back button focus to help keep my moving subject in focus.Inspiration
Friesians are one of the most beautiful horses on the planet. Whenever I post one of these horses, I get many comments from other photographers who appreciate their great majesty and beauty.Editing
Photographing black animals absolutely requires lifting the shadow in Lightroom. I also bumped the clarity slider to add a little contrasts to hair.In my camera bag
Canon 1DX and Canon 7D Mark II, EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF70-200mm f/2.8L II USM, Lee soft and hard graduated ND filters and a 10 stop "Big Stopper" ND filter, Really Right Stuff 40 Ball head on a Gitzo tripod, two Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT all in a FStop Tilopa Backpack.Feedback
Set your camera to back-button focus and your focus mode to AI Servo to keep your moving subject in focus. These horse love to run and some of my best shots have been taken at a full out run. My shutter speed was at 1/4000 to eliminate any motion blur. The 2.8f aperture blurs the background nicely, but the narrow depth of field makes focusing on the eyes very important.
