Location
This is my granddaughter during a summer vacation trip. We were taking a pontoon boat ride on lazy river, when she put on her mom's sunglasses and posed for this photo.Time
Vacation week is my favorite week of the year. We spend time with family on the water, playing games, eating lots of food and snacks, talking, laughing, and submerging ourselves into nature! Quite often we will all jump on the pontoon boat for an evening ride. This photo was taken at 7 PM on a partly cloudy evening.Lighting
The boat was heading into the sun, which made for some nice cross lighting on her face as I sat across from her. Also, the sun was ducking behind a cloud, which softened up the shadows a bit. On sunny days, I try to put the sun behind the subject to avoid harsh shadows on the face.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 7D mark II, with a EF 70x200mm 2.8f lens.Inspiration
What grandfather can resist taking photos of his cute granddaughter? She inspires me to take out my camera whenever she is with me. What else can I say? I think the inspiration of grandchildren is universal!Editing
I use Lightroom for most my post processing. I sharpen all my photos using a mask so not to over sharpen the whole photo. On this particular photo, I used the eyedropper to adjust the tint of the photo to match the sunglasses. It makes it seem like you are wearing the sunglasses yourself. In my camera bag
I carry a Canon 1DX and Canon 7D Mark II, EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF70-200mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 85mm f/1.2 USM, EF100mm 2.8 Macro lens, Lee soft and hard graduated ND filters and a 10 stop "Big Stopper" ND filter, Really Right Stuff 40 Ball head on a Gitzo tripod, two Canon Speedlites 600EX II-RT all in a FStop Tilopa Backpack.Feedback
Don't let moments like these get away, because you didn't bring your camera along! And experiment in post processing. I was surprised how changing the tint completely changed the feel of this photo.
