Underneath a frozen waterfall is a place like no other. The icicles, frost flowers, and mounds of snow make you feel like you've stepped into another world. In fact, the first time I visited this place I was reminded of "The Chronicles of Narnia" books I had read as a child. I wanted to create an image that captured both the feeling of awe that I experienced walking beneath the massive icicles, and that storybook, winter wonderland, feel of the place.

Fantastic use of a stunning location. Love the colour harmony and use of backlight to help separate the model from the background.

LOVE this image but I can’t see her face. Wasn’t this contest titled “Faces”?

Location
This photo was taken beneath a frozen waterfall, located about 3.5 hours from my home. The drive is worth noting because I made the 7 hour round-trip drive 3 times before I was happy with the images!Time
It was captured during mid day, slightly overcast light.Lighting
There was just enough sun shining through the icy walls that day to bring out the blue-green hues in the massive icicles.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D with a 16-35mm lens, tripod mounted. Believe it or not, this image is a selfie! It was a challenging shoot for several reasons. First, there was a lot of moisture and water droplets in the air from the parts of the waterfall that had not frozen. As a result the lens frequently fogged up, or got water droplets on it. Second, I was wearing ice cleats over my gigantic winter boots under the dress and cloak. I'm not overly coordinated to begin with, and the ice cleats would catch on the dress; I was constantly tripping over my long robes. And, as you can image, it was very cold beneath the frozen falls! Temperatures were around - 15 degrees celsius. I stayed warm by wearing leggings and boots under the dress, and putting heat packs inside by gloves. I also had tons of warm clothes to change into once the shoot was finished!Inspiration
From the first moment I set foot under the massive icicles I was reminded of the "Chronicles of Narnia" books I read as I child. I knew I had to return to this spot to create an image that captured the wonder, awe, and storybook feel of the place.Editing
I always use post-processing. This is a single shot, edited first in Light Room, then in Photoshop, and finally in Nik. I did all of my basic editing in Light Room, then I used Photoshop to hide the red ice cleat that was sticking out from under my dress, and finally Nik to bring out the colour. In my camera bag
I carry two cameras - the Sony A7s for night shooting, and the Canon 6D for day shooting. My two go-to lenses are the Canon 16-35mm and the Canon 70-200 mm. I use the 16-35mm on my Sony with a Metabones adapter. I carry a ton of extra batteries (roughly 6 batteries for each camera), and extra memory cards. When I get creative with light I use a Lux pro flashlight that I've dubbed "The Staff of Ra" and Lume Cubes. The Lume Cubes are fantastic because I can adjust the light and they are waterproof. At the brightest setting I was recently able to light paint the hoodoos in Drumhellar Alberta from the parking lot!Feedback
I think a big part of any kind of landscape photography is preparing for the conditions. The location featured here is remote; there's no cellular service, and the hike to the falls is a bit sketchy in places. The ice cleats were a life saver, literally. The first time I visited I fell and slid 20 feet down the frozen falls before I caught my cleats in the ice and stopped myself. After that experience, I traveled with a buddy on my future visits. It's also cold in the mountains, so having warm clothes on hand, heat packs, and lots of layers was really important.
