Behind The Lens

Location

The kitty was a studio shoot we did in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. (my hometown)

Time

Not really applicable in the studio.

Lighting

I think it was a basic 3 light studio set up.

Equipment

I am a Nikon guy, so this would have been a D300S with a 70-200mm lens. Lighting was with Paul C Buff White Lightning studio flash units. When shooting small pets I like to have them on a table, and drape the backdrop over it. Please make sure to have handlers or the pet owner stand close to keep them from jumping off the table and hurting themselves. Getting them up on the table makes lighting much easier and keeps you from having to get down on the floor.

Inspiration

The kitten shoot was to celebrate him being part of his new forever family. In the original shot, he is grabbing on to a toy mousey. When I was checking out the photos a few years ago I was struck by the look of emotion on his little face. I wanted to emphasize that in a different way.

Editing

I decided that making it look like he was knocking on a window, in the rain. Combining the two photos in photoshop was fairly straightforward. Just a matter of making use of layers and layer masks.

In my camera bag

I currently shoot with a Nikon D500, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VRII (with a 2x teleconverter for wildlife), and a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. I use a monopod for much of my wildlife photography, and a tripod for a lot of studio shots.

Feedback

When shooting small pets take lots of photos. I generally only delete photos that are not in focus. I love composite images and always keep an eye out for potential backgrounds. There are many great videos to help learn photoshop. If you can become good at PS it is another tool in your photography kit. I also regularly use Topaz Labs software which I find indispensable.
