Behind The Lens

Location

Outdoors in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Time

A gorgeous late afternoon on a warm, slightly cloudy day. I believe it was about 4pm.

Lighting

I had brought a large reflector with me for the shoot but did not use it. During our session we were lucky enough to get a constant, light cloud cover.

Equipment

Nikon D700. Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VRII.

Inspiration

This shoot was for a client. I wanted to show the wonder and adventure of a puppy, so shooting outdoors was an easy decision.

Editing

Nothing out of the ordinary. A bit of Topaz Labs, curves adjustment, a bit of a vignette and that was all.

In my camera bag

Generally I will have a Nikon camera body or two, which is a D700 and D7100, with a couple of lenses, usually the 70-200mm F2.8 VRII and my Tamron 28-75 f2.8. If I am going to shoot nature and wildlife I will add in my Nikon TC-20EIII and my old Vivitar macro lens. I have a few different speedlights which I use at various times, and my SC 28 cord which allows me to take the flash off camera and still use TTL metering.

Feedback

With pets I always suggest to get down to their level. It is a perspective that is attention getting because we do not normally see out pets from their own level. Wide apertures are wonderful for softening distracting backgrounds that cannot be avoided. Have fun!
