GORGEOUS!! I am glad that you didn't have to "hike" any type of terrain to get this photo. :)

Thank you. No hiking for this but it really was about -35 degrees so it was not very fun after the first few moments. :)

Location
This photo was taken in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.Time
It was taken in mid afternoon on an overcast day.Lighting
The day was very overcast so the light is very flat.Equipment
Taken with a Nikon D700 and a Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VRII.Inspiration
I wish I could tell you an incredible story of hiking 5km up a mountain to get this shot, but I can't. :) Actually I received a tip that this owl was hanging out in downtown Peterborough. Sure enough he was just perched on a small tree directly outside a building right in downtown. The background of this photo is actually a building! I shot wide open at f2.8 purposely to blur out the background.Editing
Processing was fairly basic. A bit of Topaz Clarity to bring out detail in the bird and then some vignette to make him stand out from the light background better. In my camera bag
Usually I have both my Nikon D700 and a D7100. For smaller birds and far away wildlife the extra reach of the crop sensor D7100 comes in handy. If I am shooting in low light conditions or indoors I use the D700 because of the great results at high iso. For lenses I usually have my Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VRII and my Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Sometimes I will add a Nikon 2x teleconverter to the 70-200 for distant subjects. I use the vertical shutter release on both bodies because I find it helps the balance with a heavy lens on the camera. Other than that I just have your basics such as a couple of speedlights, lens cleaning cloth etc. Oh and batteries, lots of batteries!Feedback
Generally speaking barred owls are forest dwellers. Look for them at dawn and dusk. It is very important to develop a network of people that can provide tips on wildlife sightings quickly, like in this case. If you like to photograph birds check out ebird.com for recent sightings in your area and find out where the hotspots are for the species you want to photograph. I encourage everyone to check out the amazing Photoshop Plug-ins from Topaz Labs. The secret is to use them sparingly and to use layer masks so you can choose which part of the image gets the effect.
