Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near Vasto, Italy, on the so-called "Costa dei Trabocchi". The Trabocchi are ancient machines for fishing fish from the coast. Today they are no longer used for this purpose but remain as evidence of a recent past.

Time

The photo was taken at dusk, just after sunset.

Lighting

In this photo there is only natural light, just wait for the right day and time to get this kind of light

Equipment

In particular in this photo I used an exasperated wide angle, or the 10-18mm laowa which has a crazy angle of view. The camera is on a tripod because the exposure is about half a second and it would be impossible to shoot handheld at these times

Inspiration

I trabocchi are a beautiful testimony of the past of these areas, it is impossible not to photograph them if you happen to be passing through here, it is very easy to be inspired. There are several, I think at least fifty along the trabocchi coast. Some have been remodeled and house restaurants or other businesses.

Editing

I always do a bit of post production to this type of photo. In particular I adjust the light and the colors to make everything more interesting and "crunchy". I have my own workflow that I've developed over the years but I prefer not to reveal everything about it because it's kind of my "trademark" and it's part of my way of shooting. A photograph is the set of shooting and post-production, sometimes up to the press. Even if I don't print everything I shoot.

In my camera bag

For this type of shots I only bring my sony a7iii, my trusted wide angle (laowa 10-18) my manfrotto tripod and sometimes an ND64 filter. Nothing else is needed. The most important thing actually is to shoot in the day and at the right time and find the right composition.

Feedback

To shoot something like this you have to go near Vasto. Secondly, you have to go on the right day, when the sea is rough and the weather is perhaps not exactly the right one to go to the beach to sunbathe ... moreover, the beach in these days is almost empty and the people are mostly a nuisance in these cases. My advice in the summer is to go out and shoot on days when people don't go out. Sometimes photographically beautiful situations are created
