Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from a small cave located on Phra Nang Beach, Krabi, Thailand

Time

This photo was taken during sunset. Luckily it was also low-tide as that place is inaccessible during high-tide.

Lighting

The light was really beautiful as the photo was taken during the sunset. At the same time, the light made taking the photo very challenging as there was huge difference in brightness between dark rocks (including the arch in the top of the frame) and the sun which was extremely bright. That's why I decided to create HDR photo.

Equipment

I used Canon 5D MK III with a 16-35 lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

I first saw images from Phra Nang Beach in a ranking of the most beautiful beaches of the world done by National Geographic magazine many many years ago and ever since then, I wanted to photograph it myself.

Editing

As the photographed scene had a very high dynamic range I took a series of 7 photos (each with different exposure) and then merged them to HDR in Photomatix Pro.

In my camera bag

Right now I have with me Canon 5D MK IV (with 5D MK III as a backup) with several lenses like Canon 16-35 mm and Canon 24-105 mm, a tripod, several square filters from Formatt Hitech (mostly neutral density, but also some graduated filters) and a lot of memory card and batteries.

Feedback

Even though modern cameras have really amazing dynamic range, scenes like that still requires creating HDR image (or manually blending several exposures) as the brightness differences in such case can be simply too large.
